We are moving Europe's inner cities out of this dead end and closing the gap that district heating and air-source heat pumps leave open. ## System Roots is the infrastructure for urban heat. Made in Europe. The heat system is built from industrially manufactured hydraulic products with end-to-end instrumentation, metering and control. Matched to one another and quality-assured. ## Properties The range spans urban heat for entire districts down to building groups and single buildings. A first heat network started in 2017. Roots was founded to develop scalable system products from it. **Milestones** - 1994: Founding of the engineering firm Käferhaus, the technical root of Roots. 30 years of engineering DNA in building services and renewable heat. - 2017: SmartBlock Geblergasse, the first urban heat network based on renewable energy, by owner and architect Zeininger, goes into operation. - 2021: Roots is founded. Co-founder Wieland Moser receives the Austrian State Prize 2021 for the technical planning of the SmartBlock Geblergasse. - 2023: Development of our R&D centre, the Roots·House, begins. Focus on modularisation, standardisation and the acquisition of first first-of-a-kind installations. - 2024: Research grants (FFG, Vienna Business Agency, Climate Fund) are approved. This enables the capitalisation of the entire system development. - 2025: We move into the Roots·House. The first installations go into operation. Acquisition of first building-stock owners for broader application succeeds. - 2026: Series production of the core components from Austrian manufacturing has started. Over 20 further sites in the DACH region are already in implementation. ## Research & Development We created the Roots·House to bring interdisciplinary product development together under one roof. **In-House Development** - Own technology. Own living lab. - We build the heat system for districts. Hardware, software and logistics under one shared roof. - The hard work lies in modularisation, standardisation and software development, and in the deep integration of all technical disciplines. - In the Roots·House in Vienna-Penzing we reproduce every urban scenario under real conditions before a new product goes into production. - We are funded by FFG, the Vienna Business Agency and the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund. **Focus Areas** - Modularisation: We translate complex installation and instrumentation and control technology into prefabricated, modular components. One of our most important results is the Roots·Hub, which replaces entire plant rooms in compact form. - Standardisation: One of the greatest effects of modularisation is that standards become possible. The focus is on radically simplified interfaces to the remaining project work, reduced to a few steps, and on the foundations for series production. - Scaling: Building on the modular, standardised components, series production becomes possible.
