Where we come from.
The roots of Roots reach back to 1994. A first heat network started in 2017. Roots was founded to develop scalable system products from it.
- 1994
Founding of the engineering firm Käferhaus, the technical root of Roots. 30 years of engineering DNA in building services and renewable heat.
- 2017
SmartBlock Geblergasse, the first urban heat network based on renewable energy, by owner and architect Zeininger, goes into operation.
- 2021
Roots is founded. Co-founder Wieland Moser receives the Austrian State Prize 2021 for the technical planning of the SmartBlock Geblergasse.
- 2023
Development of our R&D centre, the Roots·House, begins. Focus on modularisation, standardisation and the acquisition of first first-of-a-kind installations.
- 2024
Research grants (FFG, Vienna Business Agency, Climate Fund) are approved. This enables the capitalisation of the entire system development.
- 2025
We move into the Roots·House. The first installations go into operation. Acquisition of first building-stock owners for broader application succeeds.
- 2026
Series production of the core components from Austrian manufacturing has started. Over 20 further sites in the DACH region are already in implementation.
Who we are.
Roots is led by an experienced team that has already built several companies successfully. Our technicians are pioneers, some with over 30 years of experience in energy and building services, and have realised landmark installations.
Brought together in the team: building services, instrumentation and control technology, civil engineering, electrical engineering, product development, real estate and software development. And when it counts, even aerospace engineering.

We build the heat system for districts. Hardware, software and logistics under one shared roof.
The hard work lies in modularisation, standardisation and software development, and in the deep integration of all technical disciplines. In the Roots·House in Vienna-Penzing we reproduce every urban scenario under real conditions before a new product goes into production.
We are funded by FFG, the Vienna Business Agency and the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund.
